Digital Wiro Bound Calendars

Our most popular calendar choice. Choose from either wire bound with a hanger or wire bound with a drill hole.

Introduction

This article takes you through the different kinds of calendars and how your files need to be setup for each.

Templates

Calendars are tricky to design because of the orientation that the pages need to be. We recommend using the templates that can be downloaded here or via the Resources tab in your portal. Calendar Templates

Calendars

Desktop

Desktop calendars are the most straightforward of all calendars to design. There are templates available.
Things to keep in mind when designing:
  1. Ensure a larger margin at the top of your page for the wire binding.
  2. Set up your file as the finishing orientation.
  3. It’s best to design your artwork as single pages (even if it's double-sided).

Wiro Bound with Hanger

Wiro-bound calendars are commonly printed one-sided and wiro bound at the top, with a wire hanger.
Things to keep in mind when designing:
  1. Ensure a larger margin at the top of your page for the wire binding but also a half circle cut out to make room for the hanging loop.
  2. Half circle cut is approx 10mm deep, 20mm wide and situated in the centre top of the page
  3. Set up your file as the finishing orientation.
  4. It’s best to design your artwork as single pages (even if it's double-sided).

Saddle Stapled & Wiro Bound with Drill Hole

These two calendar options tend to be the most complicated to get the orientation correct before sending to print. We’ve made it super easy and have templates available for these on the most common sizes.
Things to keep in mind when designing:
  1. Supply your files as single page PDF’s
  2. With Wiro Bound Calendars, ensure you leave a larger margin on the bound edge.
  3. For Saddle Stapled calendars, covers are to be supplied as a spread if the cover is on another paper stock otherwise, single pages are ok.
  4. Allow 130mm from the edge of the outside margin for the drill hole, the drill hole goes through every page in the middle of page height. (Drill hole size is approx 4mm)
  5. If you’re unsure about the orientation of your pages, test print!
How to Supply the PDF
Unfortunately, InDesign doesn’t allow you to create a document with the page binding to be horizontal, so below are examples of how you should orientate your pages.
If you want to view your pages the ‘correct’ way so you can design them super easily, rotate the Cover & Text spreads 90° clockwise. But for the Calender back page, rotate that page 90° counter-clockwise.
Apply the same theory above if your calendar is bound on the short edge for rotating the pages, but make sure you have your pages set up as per below.

Tip: Design these calendars as ‘facing pages’ in InDesign, not single pages, it
makes it easier for you to identify the spreads. Essentially just think of these
as a complicated booklet!
